The NEMA 17 bipolar stepper motor is a two-phase hybrid stepping motor with a 42.3 mm square frame and 48 mm body length that produces precise rotational motion in discrete 1.8 degree increments without a position encoder. This 48 mm class (represented by the OMC-StepperOnline 17HS19-2004S1) delivers a holding torque of 59 Ncm at 2.0 A per phase, with a phase resistance of 1.4 ohm and phase inductance of 3.0 mH, making it well suited for medium-load positioning applications. It is driven exclusively by a stepper motor driver (such as A4988, DRV8825, or TMC2209) via step and direction logic or PWM current chopping, and it operates in full-step, half-step, or microstepping modes depending on the driver. The motor has no onboard feedback or encoder, so position integrity relies on open-loop step counting unless an external encoder is added for closed-loop operation.
